About Bruce

A story of choice: victim of circumstance, or empowered by it.

Bruce was born into a violent and dysfunctional family. He watched the abusive relationships his mother endured, including from his own father, and carried that pain through a childhood spent moving across Victoria, New South Wales, and Surfers Paradise from the late 1950s into the 1970s.

He learned to fight first and push people away. It got him into plenty of trouble as he knocked about the colourful surf culture of the 1970s: odd jobs, dust-ups, and the natural healing he found in the ocean.

By the 1980s, happily married, the old emotions crept back. What followed was a decades-long journey through teaching, travel, and counselling, learning to notice feelings, to be present, and to choose rather than react.

His story is told through snippets and humour, proof that the path is never straight, but the "never give up" mantra breaks the cycle.

The Book

"Lucifer: He Knew I Would Never Stay Down"

This is a story about choice: to be a victim of circumstances, or become empowered by them. Bruce McCabe tells the story of a man who never gave up on himself after a traumatic and violent childhood, and the pain and isolation he bore watching the abusive relationships his mother endured, including with his own father.

That pattern repeated with other men as the family moved to escape the breakdown of relationships, from the late 1950s through the 1970s. Bruce's struggle to be a good man, to overcome trauma and its instinctive reactions, is tested again in the 2020s. But the effort of the last 35 years finally lets him make the right choices.

"The essence of the book weaves Bruce's struggle to be a better man, to overcome trauma and its instinctive reactions."

Weaving childhood trauma with the healing power of nature, teaching, counselling, and an unshakable openness to learn, Bruce's story is both an uncovering of unconscious truths and a celebration of joyous realisation.
